CELEBRATING A PIONEERING AUSTRALIAN PAINTER IN A MAJOR RETROSPECTIVE 

Town Hall Gallery presents Quiet Corners: The Art of AME Bale, a major retrospective celebrating one of Australia’s most accomplished and enduring painters. 

Opening Thursday 12 August and on display until 17 October 2026, this significant exhibition brings together more than 100 paintings and works on paper drawn from public and private collections across Australia, offering audiences a rare opportunity to engage with the remarkable artistic legacy of AME Bale (1875-1955).

Best known for her luminous floral still lifes, Bale transformed roses, tulips and zinnias into works of extraordinary subtlety and beauty. Bale was celebrated for her mastery of tone, light and composition, becoming one of Australia’s leading exponents of Tonalism with a distinctive artistic voice that balanced rigorous observation with poetic sensitivity.

Town Hall Gallery curator Rachel Keir-Smith described AME Bale as a remarkable artist whose work deserves a closer look.

“While AME Bale is often celebrated for her exquisite flower paintings, this exhibition reveals the breadth of her practice and the extraordinary disciple that underpinned it. We are honoured to be presenting this major retrospective of “Miss Bale’s” [as she was fondly known] work, celebrating her deep engagement with light, tone and atmosphere which can be shown across interiors, landscapes, portraits and many delightful floral paintings.”

Trained at the National Gallery Art School under Frederick McCubbin and L. Bernard Hall, Bale later studied with Max Meldrum whose influential tonal theories shaped her approach to atmosphere and perception. Across a prolific career spanning more than five decades, AME Bale applied this disciplined methodology to a diverse body of work encompassing flowers, portraits, interiors and landscapes.

While Bale’s floral paintings remain among her most beloved works, Quiet Corners reveals the breadth of an artist whose practice was deeply connected to place. Living for much of her life in Kew in outer Melbourne and in Castlemaine in regional Victoria, Bale found enduring inspiration in domestic interiors, quiet suburban streets and local parklands, as well as landscapes and farmlands, capturing the character of Victoria and all its seasons with exceptional restraint and clarity. 

Quiet Corners is presented in the City of Boroondara, where Bale lived and worked for much of her life. The exhibition arrives amid growing interest in the contributions of historically overlooked women artists to Australia’s cultural history. Following recent exhibitions and scholarly attention, Quiet Corners offers a timely opportunity to reconsider Bale’s place within the national canon and recognise the lasting significance of her achievements.

Bale lived and worked in Boroondara for much of her life and this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to reconnect her art with the places, spaces and communities that inspired it.”

As part of the exhibition programming, storytelling and touring group She Shapes History will trace the footsteps of trailblazing women who shaped Boroondara, including artist AME Bale and mechanic Alice Anderson, in a two-hour walking tour of the area taking place on selected Friday and Saturday mornings over September and October.

Through a rich selection of paintings and works on paper, Quiet Corners: The Art of AME Bale invites audiences into the intimate worlds that defined the artist’s career and reveals the enduring power of careful observation, technical mastery and quiet beauty.
